A fanzine blend of fan and magazine or - zine is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon such as a literary or musical genre for the pleasure of others who share their interest. The term was coined in an October science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and first popularized within science fiction fandomand from there it was adopted by other communities.
Typically, publishers, editors, writers and other contributors of articles or illustrations to fanzines are not paid. Fanzines are traditionally circulated free of charge, or for a nominal cost to defray postage or production expenses. Copies are often offered in exchange for similar publications, or for contributions of art, articles, or letters of comment LoCswhich are then published.
Some fanzines are typed and photocopied by amateurs using standard home office equipment. A few fanzines have developed into professional publications sometimes known as "prozines"and many professional writers were first published in fanzines; some continue to contribute to them after establishing a professional reputation. The term fanzine is sometimes confused with " fan magazine ", but the latter term most often refers to commercially produced publications for rather than by fans.
The origins of amateur fanac "fan" publications are obscure, but can be traced at least back to 19th century literary groups in the United States which formed amateur press associations to publish collections of amateur fiction, poetry and commentary, such as H. Lovecraft 's United Amateur. As professional printing technology progressed, so did the technology of fanzines.
Early fanzines were hand-drafted or typed on a manual typewriter and printed using primitive reproduction techniques e. Only a very small number of copies could be made at a time, so circulation was extremely limited. The use of mimeograph machines enabled greater press runs, and the photocopier increased the speed and ease of publishing once more.
Today, thanks to the advent of desktop publishing and self-publicationthere is often little difference between the appearance of a fanzine and a professional magazine. When Hugo Gernsback published the first science fiction magazineAmazing Stories inhe allowed for a large letter column which printed reader's addresses.
By readers, often young adults, would write to each other, bypassing the magazine. Early efforts included simple carbon copies but that proved insufficient.Dr n. 179 del 15.06.2020
Palmer and Walter Dennis. Prior to that, the fan publications were known as "fanmags" or "letterzines". Science fiction fanzines used a variety of printing methods. Typewriters, school dittos, church mimeos and if they could afford it multi-color letterpress or other mid-to-high level printing.
Some fans wanted their news spread, others reveled in the artistry and beauty of fine printing. Hecto used an aniline dye, transferred to a tray of gelatin, and paper would be placed on the gel, one sheet at a time, for transfer. Messy and smelly, the process could create vibrant colors for the few copies produced, the easiest aniline dye to make being purple technically indigo. The next small but significant technological step after hecto is the spirit duplicatoressentially the hectography process using a drum instead of the gelatin.
Introduced by Ditto Corporation inthese machines were known for the next six decades as Ditto Machines and used by fans because they were cheap to use and could with a little effort print in color. The mimeograph machine, which forced ink through a wax paper stencil cut by the keys of a typewriter, was the standard for many decades.A word blend is formed by combining two separate words with different meanings to form a new one. These words are often created to describe a new invention or phenomenon that combines the definitions or traits of two existing things.
Word blends are also known as portmanteau pronunciation port-MAN-toea French word meaning "trunk" or "suitcase. In that book, Humpty Dumpty tells Alice about making up new words from parts of existing ones:. There are different ways of creating word blends. One way is to combine portions of two other words to make a new one. The word "camcorder," for example," combines parts of "camera" and "recorder.
Word blends can also be formed by overlapping or combining phonemes, which are parts of two words that sound alike. One example of an overlapping word blend is "Spanglish," which is an informal mix of spoken English and Spanish. Blends can also be formed through the omission of phonemes.
Geographers sometimes refer to "Eurasia," the landmass that combines Europe and Asia. This blend is formed by taking the first syllable of "Europe" and adding it to the word "Asia. English is a dynamic language that is constantly evolving. Many of the words in the English language are derived from ancient Latin and Greek or from other European languages such as German or French.
But starting in the 20th century, blended words began to emerge to describe new technologies or cultural phenomena.
For instance, as dining out became more popular, many restaurants began serving a new weekend meal in the late morning. It was too late for breakfast and too early for lunch, so someone decided to make a new word that described a meal that was a little bit of both.
Thus, " brunch " was born. As new inventions changed the way people lived and worked, the practice of combining parts of words to make new ones became popular. In the s, as traveling by car became more common, a new kind of hotel that catered to drivers emerged. These "motor hotels" quickly proliferated and became known as "motels. New word blends are being created all the time as cultural and technological trends emerge.
InMerriam-Webster added the word "mansplaining" to their dictionary. This blended word, which combines "man" and "explaining," was coined to describe the habit that some men have of explaining things in a condescending manner. Here are some examples of word blends and their roots:.Suzuki lt125 oil filter

Blended words are a lot of fun if you ask me. Making blended words sounds like fun right? Some blended words in English are so common, most native English speakers forget they are a combination of two existing words.
One of the reasons I like blended words so much is because they show linguistic creativity! Blended words are symbols of how languages grow, change, and reflect current culture. Eating brunch is very common on weekend days in America. All of these words are somewhat resent additions to the English language, they are newly made words, from two existing words. So, for know we have to just use those blended words that are already out there like those listed above and wait to see what others develop over time.

Great short to the point blarticle! Thanks so much.A blend sometimes blend wordlexical blendportmanteau or portmanteau word is a word formed from parts of two or more other words. At least one of these parts is not a morph the realization of a morpheme but instead a mere splintera fragment that is normally meaningless:. Words containing splinters I shall call blends.Numpy append runtime
Blends of two or more words may be classified from each of three viewpoints: morphotactic, morphonological, and morphosemantic. Blends may be classified morphotactically into two kinds: total and partial. In a total blend, each of the words creating the blend is reduced to a mere splinter. Much less commonly in English, the beginning of one word may be followed by the beginning of another:. A splinter of one word may replace part of another, as in three coined by Lewis Carroll in " Jabberwocky ":.
They are sometimes termed intercalative blends. In a partial blend, one entire word is concatenated with a splinter from another.
These have also been called sandwich words, and classed among intercalative blends. When two words are combined in their entirety, the result is considered a compound word rather than a blend.
What Are Word Blends?
For example, bagpipe is a compound, not a blend, of bag and pipe. Morphonologically, blends fall into two kinds: overlapping and non-overlapping. Overlapping blends are those for which the ingredients' consonants, vowels or even syllables overlap to some extent. The overlap can be of different kinds. There may be an overlap that is both phonological and orthographic, but with no other shortening:.
The overlap may be both phonological and orthographic, and with some additional shortening to at least one of the ingredients:. These are also termed imperfect blends. If the phonological but non-orthographic overlap encompasses the whole of the shorter ingredient, as in.
They are also called orthographic blends. For some linguists, an overlap is a condition for a blend. Non-overlapping blends also called substitution blends have no overlap, whether phonological or orthographic:. Morphosemantically, blends fall into two kinds: attributive and coordinate. Attributive blends also called syntactic or telescope blends are those in which one of the ingredients is the head and the other is attributive. What is FANZINE? What does FANZINE mean? FANZINE meaning, definition \u0026 explanation
A porta-light is a portable light, not a light-emitting or light portability; light is the head. A snobject is a snobbery-satisfying object and not an objective or other kind of snob; object is the head. As is also true for conventional, non-blend attributive compounds among which bathroomfor example, is a kind of room, not a kind of baththe attributive blends of English are mostly head-final and mostly endocentric.
As an example of an exocentric attributive blend, Fruitopia may metaphorically take the buyer to a fruity utopia and not a utopian fruit ; however, it is not a utopia but a drink.
Coordinate blends also called associative or portmanteau blends combine two words having equal status, and have two heads.
Thus brunch is neither a breakfasty lunch nor a lunchtime breakfast but instead some hybrid of breakfast and lunch; Oxbridge is equally Oxford and Cambridge universities. This too parallels conventional, non-blend compounds: an actor—director is equally an actor and a director. Blending can also apply to roots rather than words, for instance in Israeli Hebrew :.
Blending may occur with an error in lexical selectionthe process by which a speaker uses his semantic knowledge to choose words. Lewis Carroll's explanation, which gave rise to the use of 'portmanteau' for such combinations, was:. Humpty Dumpty's theory, of two meanings packed into one word like a portmanteau, seems to me the right explanation for all. For instance, take the two words "fuming" and "furious.Any card shown after the full-time whistle has been blown will be disregarded.

Jumps trainer: Nicky HendersonNicky Henderson was denied in heartbreaking fashion with Whisper in last weekend's Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury, but handsome compensation came courtesy of Buveur d'Air at Newcastle. Last season's Champion Hurdle winner resumed after seven months off with a smooth victory in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, and whet the appetite for what promises to be a thrilling clash with Faugheen later in the season.
The in-form Henderson has plenty to keep himself occupied in the meantime, however, with five entries at the time of writing in next Saturday's Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham, including Gold Present.
The seven-year-old was a winner on the aforementioned Ladbrokes Trophy card, despite jumping right and not looking entirely straightforward, and he remains potentially well treated from just 5 lb higher in the weights. He should give another good account in a race that could also feature consistent stablemate Theinval. An easy way to create a good environment for gluten-free bread to rise is to turn your oven to 200 degrees F. When it reaches this temperature, turn the oven off and place a shallow baking pan partially filled with hot water in the oven.
Lightly cover the loaf pan with a damp towel and place in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until the dough rises to the top of the loaf pan.
This method really does speed up the time it takes for gluten-free bread to rise. Just be sure to carefully watch the process so that your bread does rise over the top of the pan before baking. Work With Room Temperature IngredientsYeast loves a warm environment and bread will rise more quickly and completely when ingredients are at room temperature rather than cold. The Waste-free LunchboxIt has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year.
That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school. If you're like us, you're always on the lookout for small changes that make a real difference in the world, and packing a waste-free lunch is once such change that's easy to make. If you walk around at lunchtime and take a good look at the lunches our children bring to school, here's what the typical lunch will look like: In this scenario very little trash is generated because foods are bought in bulk or in larger packages.
The packaging is left at home for reuse or recycling. Food waste also decreases because with a reusable lunch container, children can re-pack uneaten food instead of dumping it, packaging and all, into the school trash can.
Education is the first step in the transition to a waste-free lunch. Talk to your children about why the school has decided to institute a waste-free lunch program. Provide them with age-appropriate information about the negative impact of a disposable lunch.Four agendas of the president
